Want to eliminate Analysis Paralysis?
By Ted Behr, M. Ed., CPCC, ACC
One common cause of procrastination is “analysis paralysis” or getting stuck because you are overthinking something. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to save yourself from the clutches of over-analysis.
#1: Take Imperfect Action.
Just get started, then get it done. Action is the best remedy for overcoming analysis paralysis.
The mere motion of taking action creates momentum which helps to keep you going. It doesn’t
have to be pretty, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to be done. You can always fix it up and polish it later.
#2: Embrace Uncertainty.
You don’t know what the future will bring. There are so many unforeseen future factors that it’s
impossible to predict the way that everything is going to go.
People say that success changes you. Trust me, it does. It makes you better.
Embrace the fact that you’re going to be different, no matter what, keep a few good friends
around who will help keep you grounded, and you’ll be just fine.
#3: Simply Shake It Up.
There’s an old saying, “Stay out of your head, kid. It’s a bad neighborhood.”
One of the easiest ways to get out of a head-trip is to get into your body. Take a yoga class, do 20 pushups, have a private dance party, or practice deep breaths and relaxation exercises. Get into your body, quit over-thinking things, and get after it!
Life is not a problem to be solved, it’s a mystery to be lived. If your head becomes your master,
you’ll forever be enslaved.
I challenge you to throw off your chains and go for something crazy this week. It’s time for a
stretch goal, and the only way for you to achieve it is by moving forward, despite your fears.
